Mistress Meg Dods was the formidable landlady of the Cleikum Inn near Peebles. Immortalised in Sir Walter Scott's novel ' St Ronan's Well', Mistress Dods was a woman of 'uncertain age', of modest origin, warm-hearted, garrulous - and given to speaking her mind.

A superb cook, Meg Dods was a rigorous task-master. Staff (and guests) trembled before her. But her reputation for hospitality and homespun yarns attracted custom from far and wide.
