The Mary King Ghostfest is a ten day celebration of all that is spooky - a unique opportunity to tune into your 'sensitive' side, and maybe even have a psychic experience!
Professor Richard Wiseman of the University of Hertfordshire argues that ghosts and ghost stories satisfy a basic human need for re-assurance:
- There is a strong human desire to believe in survival after bodily death.
- There is a belief that some spirits are 'lost' and calling on the living to help.
- It is acknowledged that life is not always fair - but ghost stories that focus on revenge seem to demonstrate that ultimately the universe is a just place.
Mercat Tours evokes the spirits of the past daily on its Scheduled Tours. However, since we opened the underground vaults beneath the South Bridge to the public in 1994, many visitors have claimed that The Vaults may be empty - but they are not unoccupied.
This eerie setting is home to dark, mysterious and often tragic apparitions whose ghostly presence leaves a lingering sense of immense sorrow and deprivation. The Vaults lure and fascinate all - and instill fear in many.
