The Vaults which support the South Bridge were constructed in 1785. They became enclosed soon after. By 1830 they were abandoned and remained empty until Mercat Tours began taking visitors round them in 1994.
The Vaults may be empty - but many claim they are not unoccupied. This eerie setting is home to dark, mysterious and often tragic apparitions whose ghostly presence leaves a lingering sense of immense sorrow and deprivation. The Vaults lure and fascinate all - and instill fear in many.
Professor Richard Wiseman conducted an extensive study in the Vaults as part of the Edinburgh Science Festival in 2001. Visitors reported high levels of paranormal activity during the study.
Ghost Hunters have the rare opportunity to conduct scientific research using the most up-to-date equipment during our Vaults Vigils and shorter Paranormal Investigations.
Mercat Tours opens the Vaults to the public to investigate the Paranormal at the following times ........
