It seems like no time at all since the schools returned from their Christmas break however the mid-term holidays are upon us! Trying to find fun activities for all the family and something to keep the kids entertained can be difficult whether it be for the wee ones or for older children, so we’ve put together a few ideas to help you out:
For the history lovers
Scotland is not known for its good weather and Edinburgh itself is famous for having four seasons in one day. For many, spending the day outside is not ideal. However, no matter the weather the National Museum of Scotland is the perfect way to spend a rainy morning or afternoon.
There is plenty of Scottish and world history as well as science, art and fun interactive exhibits for the kids to enjoy! The Museum also has 3 new galleries to explore including Egypt and East Asia. Plus, it is only a short walk from the Royal Mile.
This is the perfect tour for those who want to know more about the gritty living conditions of Edinburgh as well as getting the opportunity to visit the Blair Street Underground Vaults!

Gory Stories: The Kid’s Tour
The perfect tour for those wee adventurers. This tour will take you around Edinburgh’s Old Town – its closes and alleyways to hear about Edinburgh’s more gruesome characters as well as stories of gardyloo and witches. Get to know what school children of the 19th century, just like you, got up to in these gritty times.
You’ll end the tour by exploring the Blair Street Underground Vaults and you’ll even get a special gift to take home with you!
Canongate Graveyard/Greyfriars Kirkyard
Want to explore some of Edinburgh’s darker past on your own? Some of the best places to do this are the many graveyards around Edinburgh.
Head to the Canongate Graveyard to explore the graves of such Scottish characters such as Adam Smith, David Rizzio and the infamous cannibal of the Canongate – James Douglas. For the adults, you can hear more about these characters on our Doomed, Dead and Buried tour.
Head to the other side of town and you will find the Greyfriars Kirkyard. This is the perfect place to explore for those Harry Potter fans in the family. Try and find Tom Riddle and McGonagall amongst the names in the graves. But be careful, the graveyard is said to be haunted by former Lord Advocate Sir George Mackenzie who goes by the name of ‘Bluidy’.

Printmaking workshop at Riddles Court
For those who simply want to get artsy over the holidays, Riddles Court is offering printmaking workshops where you will get the chance to turn your hand at 19th-century arts and crafts. Make a nice picture, some wrapping paper or even a card!
