The Vaults Revealed: Edinburgh’s Underground Opens to All

Mercat Tours launches new accessible experience inviting everyone to witness Edinburgh’s deepest, largest underground vaults — without the stairs. 

In its 40th anniversary year, Mercat Tours is reaffirming its commitment to inclusive, innovative storytelling with the launch of The Vaults Revealed — a seated, sensory experience that opens up one of Edinburgh’s most extraordinary hidden sites to all.

Traditionally, the historic Blair Street Underground Vaults, exclusive to Mercat Tours, were accessible only by two flights of stairs, making them beyond reach for some visitors. This has now changed. Through a carefully considered approach Mercat Tours has crafted a way for everyone to see, hear and touch this remarkable site. Guests can now transport themselves back through the vaults' rich history through an interactive, audio-visual film — guided by Mercat’s Master Storytellers — and enjoyed from the comfort of a seat, with no stairs required. 

Hosted in the accessible Vaults Museum on Blair Street, just above the vaults themselves, The Vaults Revealed allows visitors to step into the depths of Edinburgh’s past with the press of a button. Whether exploring at their own pace or with support, it’s designed for guests with visual, sensory or mobility needs, or anyone who feels anxious in confined spaces. 

Tucked beneath Edinburgh’s South Bridge, the Blair Street Underground Vaults are a labyrinth of echoing chambers and candlelit corridors, steeped in stories of the city's past and preserved in their original condition for true authenticity. This latest launch builds on Mercat Tours' acclaimed new multi-sensory tours, which use bespoke scents and audio technology to engage all the senses. It’s part of a wider mission to ensure that everyone — locals and visitors alike — can access the rich heritage stories of Scotland’s capital. 

Mercat’s commitment to both accessibility and inclusivity is demonstrated throughout the entire visitor experience and recognised through its B Corp certification, Euan’s Guide accreditation, and its distinction as the first Scottish attraction featured on VisitScotland partner Tourism Cares’ Meaningful Travel Map. All support team and storyteller guides are trained in inclusive communication and disability awareness. Assistance dogs are welcome on all tours and hearing loops are provided, with large-print and oral interpretation available in the Vaults Museum. The team takes pride in making every guest feel informed, comfortable, and connected.
