This year, we proudly celebrate 40 years of sharing Edinburgh’s extraordinary stories – from the iconic sites of the Old Town to the hidden depths of the Blair Street Underground Vaults. As we reach the end of a year filled with celebrations, we’re taking a moment to reflect on the voices, memories and moments that have shaped our journey, and to look forward with excitement to what the next chapter will bring.

The Spirit of the Mile, a specially commissioned Ode written and narrated by professional dramatist, former storyteller and long-time friend of Mercat, Karen McKenzie, encapsulates this spirit of reflection and renewal. Honouring the voices that echo through Edinburgh’s remarkable history, the Ode serves as both a love letter to the Royal Mile and a thank-you to our Master Storytellers, whose honesty, care and human connection breathe life into the city’s past every single day.
