#StatueforElsie

20th Feb 2018

We are absolutely delighted to announce our support for a #StatueForElsie

As award-winning storytellers specialising in the rich and diverse history of Edinburgh, we are absolutely delighted to be part of The OneCity Trust campaign to honour one of the City's most remarkable residents - Dr Elsie Inglis. We will be holding exclusive special events throughout the year to raise funds for a long overdue tribute to this pioneering doctor.

Many of the techniques Dr Inglis introduced greatly benefited the poorer women of Edinburgh. She established a maternity hospital on the High Street, right on our doorstep. We are very excited to share the story of Elsie and the impact she had on the Old Town - we even have staff that were born at the Edinburgh hospital that bore her name!

Our tours of the city regularly point out the fine statues of the Royal Mile and share the stories of the varied men they honour. This year, with the anniversary of The Representation of the People Act, which gave some women the right the vote, we are proud that our fundraising will contribute to raising a statue of a female resident that impacted so many lives and campaigned tirelessly for votes for women.

Dr Inglis is also a prominent Scottish war hero. We are excited to introduce the story of a Scottish woman that founded all-female medical units to offer assistance during WW1 to the allied forces. This year, of course, marks the centenary of the end of the First World War, a statue for Elsie in her home city would be a fitting memorial for a remarkable achievement.

We would love you to get involved!
